Crowdsourcing: Should You Do It?
It has been said many times that there is no "I" in "team".  crowdsourcing is a termed coined by Jeff Howe, who defined it as the "process by which the power of the many can be leveraged to accomplish feats that were once the province of the specialized few."  A good example would be the Superbowl Dorito's ad campaign where Dorito's tasked fans with creating their own commercial for the tasty tortilla chip treat and the winner would be played during the Super Bowl.    Let's break down what makes this such a great idea:

  1. Community Involvement and Buzz - User created content is absolutely huge now, and with so many people having access to tech that makes it easy to create and share video, music, and text online instantly this makes it a great buzz marketing tool.
  2. More Kids In The Pool - There are a surprising amount of creative people out there, and many fanatic enough to create some interesting things.  Great examples of this are abundant in the open source world like Wordpress and Joomla.  These content management systems are both free to the public for creating websites, and powered by fanatics everywhere adding new features constantly.  By using this pool of creative talent your team is more than just your office, it's the world.
  3. Fresh Ideas, Cool Stuff - Yes, just like the motto on RED's business card, crowdsourcing pulls from a large, diverse group of people that may take an idea and spin it on it's head for you.  For example, you may hold a contest saying "We need a new mascot!"  Lay down some guidelines and a prize for the winner, and task your fans with coming up with a new mascot design.  You may be surprised to find ideas you would have never thought about.
While this all sounds great, and it most definitely can be, always keep in mind that it should never be your sole focus on marketing.  Being able to provide your own marketing that has focus definitely has it's benefits, and should never be neglected.  Just know that you may have a deeper well for new ideas waiting for you than you think.
